The 2015 Gartner CIO Agenda Report reveals that mobilizing an enterprise is a top priority to most CIO’s. However, encountering a combination of myths and limitations can stalwart the kickoff of a mobility initiative. If you are not familiar with these myths, we are starting a blog series covering each one.
Enterprise Application Mobility Myth #1: Pushing Existing Desktop Apps to Mobile Devices By Using a Smaller Version
Some companies believe that mobility is simply a matter of replacing the desktop screen with a smaller version. Companies favoring this approach tend to use simple solutions (either in house or working with a mobile application development company) like rendering desktop web apps in the mobile browser or using desktop virtualization to push existing applications to mobile devices.
But it’s not that simple. Anyone who has ever tried to use a desktop enterprise application that’s not optimized for mobile can immediately see the problems with this approach. Users spend time trying to expand the screen enough to choose the right menu item, select a check box, scroll around in the application or any number of problematic user activities. Whenever a user has to spend more time focusing on the device and its interface than the task at hand, productivity suffers. This is when one should really think about a mobile enterprise application platform.
