On January 28th, technologists around the globe will observe Data Privacy Day, a day to raise awareness and promote privacy and data protection best practices. In addition to being an educational initiative, Data Privacy Day promotes events and activities that stimulate the development of technology tools that encourage compliance with privacy laws and regulations, and create dialogues among stakeholders interested in advancing data protection and privacy.

In honor of Data Privacy Day, we are exploring how rapid mobile app development (RMAD)  platforms, such as PowWow Mobile’s SmartUX, are keeping data secure for organizations and their users:

No Data or Logic Stored on the Device

Most rapid mobile app development platforms including PowWow Mobile follow a “no data at rest” policy that does not store corporate data directly on the mobile device. If your teams are using a platform that follows a “data at rest” approach, it means that your corporate information is sitting on your users’ mobile devices. When data is stored on a mobile device for long periods of time and isn’t viewed by your team, it is easier for hackers to get this information without anyone noticing.

Think about how common it is for people to leave their smartphones in a cab or have it stolen from a busy restaurant or bar. It happens all the time. If your corporate data ends up in the wrong hands, your company is at risk for bank accounts being wiped or proprietary information getting into a competitor’s hands. Instead of storing data on the device, it should be stored on the cloud or behind a firewall to keep it secure. Storing data on the mobile device is simply asking for your organization to experience a data breach. If your users need to store data on their mobile devices, it is important to use a secure EMM or MDM solution.

Hide All Enterprise Data Sources

The right rapid mobile app development platform will allow your team to create apps that connect to any of your organization’s existing applications or legacy systems. For example, if you are creating an app for your sales team, it will need to be able to connect to their CRM system, such as Salesforce. If you’re working in manufacturing production on the shop floor, your app needs to be able to connect to ERP systems, such as SAP or Oracle to manage inventory.

When your data access is hidden behind a gateway, your organization never has to worry that information is being stored outside of your firewall, where it may be hacked. Your organization should never have to worry that your business data is being cached or replicated outside of the gateway.

Fully Encrypt Your Data

Encryption is the process of encoding messages or information in a way that only authorized parties can read it. With encryption, your team can keep data safe in two ways, one for current data that is in transit via e-mails, file sharing, or messaging, and the other for stored data that is archived.

The purpose of encryption is to ensure that only authorized users can access sensitive data using a decryption key. If an unauthorized user tries to access this data, it will be impossible. If your organization chooses to use a rapid mobile app development platform that does not use encryption, you are putting your users at risk to be hacked and proprietary information stolen.
